Patron Shogoth, Champion of Accolade

Busy night tonight. First I got the Patron title from being awesome in a BG (for once), I managed to get exalted with the guild and later we dinged 24, so I bought the pet and got the 100 pets achievment. :)

Sho v2.0: Lvl 8: Demon Armor and Voidwalker

At lvl 8 you get an armor spell called Demon Armor. Nothing much to say about it, just keep sure you have it on yourself since it increases your armor and the health you get from spells.

You also get a new demon you can use instead of the imp, the voidwalker. It doesn't do alot of damage on your enemies but what it is good at is to take the focus from you and make them attack him instead.

This means that you need to take it a bit easy in the beginning of a fight to make it possible for your demon to gain aggro from the mobs. Warlocks are notorious aggrohogs and getting used to not go all out in the beginning is a good thing for later when you will be doing dungeons and raid with other players who are going to try to keep the aggro from you. :)

Sho v2.0: Lvl 5 & 6: Life tap and Drain Life.

You might wonder what the biggest difference between a mage and a warlock is. Both are ranged classes that uses magic spells. Both rely on mana as a resource to be able to cast. But mages has a nice tower in Stormwind while warlocks have a nasty cellar. And mages does more damage per second than warlocks, so, why, why on earth would you like to keep on playing as a warlock?

Because you now have Life Tap (lvl 5) and Drain Life (lvl 6) and are able to trade some of your health for mana. As long as you have a way to restore health, from a healer or by draining life from your enemy there is nothing stopping you. Keep in mind that Drain Life doesn't do alot of damage but it is a really nice spell to have if you manage to get the enemy mob to attack your imp instead of you and you can stay at a safe distance and drain some life back to you.

Just use Life Tap wisely. :) You don't want to kill yourself.

Sho v2.0: Lvl 4: Corruption

At level 4 there is time for yet another DoT. Corruption.

Your spell priority just got a bit more complicated. :) You will now have 2 DoTs to keep track of and casting Shadow Bolts as fillers while you wait to renew any of the DoTs.

Also, Corruption has a nice feature, it is an Instant cast. Thats means that you can cast it while moving. You can even run away with your back to the target and still cast it. Strategic retreat anyone? :)

Sho v2.0: Lvl 3: dots?

At level 3 you will get a new spell: Immolate. And in contrast to Shadow Bolt, Immolation is a DoT, a Damage Over Time, spell.

Actually I think that Immolate is probably one of the easiest ways to explain just what a DoT is. Immolate set enemies on fire. It does some initial damage and then keep on hurting for as long as it burns. Simple as that. :)

So, which spell should you use now when you are at level 3, Immolate or Shadow Bolt?

The short answer, both. If you keep Immolate ticking while casting Shadow Bolt in between refreshes you will be doing the most damage, it will be like you are hurting your enemies with two spells at the same time.

The long answer, this is the base of how you play warlocks, keep DoTs ticking and cast your direct damage spells as often as you can when you are not refreshing any DoTs. This means that we will now have our first spell priority (some call it a spell-rotation), in short it is a list of spells to use ordered from most important to least.

1. Immolate (if Immolate is about to run out)
2. Shadow Bolt.

See it as a version of wack-a-mole, cast the spell that is most important as soon as it is available. Start with Immolate and as long as your enemy is burning cast Shadow Bolt. Don't get too comfortable and dumb it down to "Hey, I can cast Immolate, then three bolts and then just start over, lets make a macro." cause even if something like that would work now at a low level it won't work later when you have 4 DoTs, 2 buffs and 2 cooldowns to keep track of. :)

Also, it is now things starts to get a little more interesting and we can start to talk a bit about tactics. :)

If you find yourself fighting a mob that you see is too strong for you and your health is starting to go down, do what any smart warlock would do. Warlocks are too clever to be heroes, simply put a DoT on the target, turn around and run. With a bit of luck your DoT and imp will take care of the enemy or atleast make it stop attacking you, letting you escape or gain some distance to be able to attack again without getting attacked right away.

Shogoth version 2.0

With patch 4.1 and all of my addons disabled I thought that I could take a break from my lvl85 Shogoth and bring you, Shogoth v2.0. :)

It could be nice to start a new warlock and at the same time try to document a little about it is to level one in contrast to all the you-are-a-lvl85-with-full-bis-posts out there.

So, what you start out with as a lvl 1 warlock is this. You and your imp and one offensive spell, Shadow Bolt.
The two things you need to keep in mind, even though it won't matter much at this low level are:
1. You are a clothie. You have cloth armour. Ever tried to stop a sword with a piece of cotton? Stay far away from your enemies.
2. Shadow Bolt has a long range. Keep your distance and you might take the mobs down before they even reach you.

Also worth noting is that you have no controll at all over your imp. If you attack it will attack. If you stop attacking...it will keep on attacking for you.

Let the adventure begin... :)

Power Auras for destro warlocks (Part 2) Demon Soul

Next we'll add an aura for Demon Soul. Not much to say about that buff, you get a +30% on your crit on cast time spells for 20 seconds. That means: "not the dot ticks" but you will crit a while lot more on your Incinerate, Chaos bolt and the on-cast-time damage part of Immolate. Use it as soon as it is available, the longer you keep it the longer it will take until you get a new one to play with.

Version:4.16; anim1:4; g:0; icon:spell_warlock_demonsoul; buffname:Demon Soul; r:0.2431; bufftype:15; texture:63; alpha:0.5; mine:true; combat:true; y:-24; anim2:5

Select, ctrl-c, type /powa in WoW. Click on Import and paste with ctrl-v.

You might want to play around with it a little to make it fit your ui.

Power Auras for destro warlocks (Part 1) Improved Soul Fire

So. Lets start with what Elitistjerks.com has put as #1 on the priotity list. Improved Soul Fire. You are supposed to keep it up all the time even if it means hard casting Soul Fire. Recomendations are that if you get Empowered Imp, use it right away. Also try to make your Soul Fire hit the target just as the old ISF runs out. That means that you should start casting when the timer is at cast time + time it takes to reach the target. (Don't cry, noone will laugh at you for not pulling that one off, the most important thing is that you do keep ISF up at all.)

Version:4.9; b:0; g:0.8784; icon:Spell_Fire_Fireball02; buffname:Improved Soul Fire; texture:142; alpha:0.19; mine:true; soundend:22; combat:true; size:0.28; y:-4; timer.HideLeadingZeros:true; timer.h:1.62; timer.enabled:true; timer.cents:false; timer.y:-58; timer.x:-1
Version:4.9; b:0.0824; anim1:4; g:0; icon:Spell_Fire_Fireball02; buffname:Improved Soul Fire; texture:142; alpha:1; mine:true; combat:true; size:0.28; y:-4; inverse:true

I've split this up into two auras. One yellow with a counter that counts down ISF and one red pulsating aura that is visible when you don't have ISF as a reminder to cast Soul Fire.

Select one row, ctrl-c, type /powa in WoW. Click on Import and paste with ctrl-v. (Do the same for both rows)

You might want to play around with it a little to make it fit your ui.

(Start here: Power auras for destro warlocks.)

Power Auras for destro warlocks (Part 0)

So. You got the correct gems and enchants. You've done your reforging. You know the spell priorities and might have done some nice macros and/or keybindings to have easy access to them. ... but you still have a hard time getting your dps as high as "everyone else".

And, it can be a bit tricky to keep your Improved soul fire up, while keeping an eye so that Immolate, Corruption, Bane of Doom and Curse of the Elements don't fall of. Did Empovered Imp proc? Is it time for Conflagrate or Chaos bolt? Maybe wait with that Empovered Imp a second or two? Renew Demon soul? ...btw, I think you forgot to get out of the fire...

There is a great addon to give you a visual aid to when your buffs are up or when a spell is of its cd, Power Auras Classic. I never really given it a look before. But I felt that I needed something to help me keep track of all my spells and buffs.

And since you can find almost anything on Internet I found this page: Warlock Power Auras in Cataclysm a great collection of auras for warlocks. So I added them. All 20 of them.
This is what it looked like.

To be fair. It is a really good job he has done. But if you aren't that guy. Adding all of these is a bit much to take in at once. So. What I'm planning to do is to write a series of posts where I add one aura at a time and try to explain why you need to keep an eye on that spell/buff.

Hopefully it will be a nice guide on how to use Power Auras but also a way to get your dps as high as possible. :)

Genders of warlock minions.

Incubus and Succubus?

"I'm happy to share we actually do have plans for offering players a choice between male and female versions of all warlock demons. This is a task already in our system, though I don't have a time frame for you at the moment. Other art tasks could always take precedence, but we're committed to making this happen. :)"

My first reaction was "Hahaha, what a silly idea." ... But when I think about it, it a very good idea actually. First of all it would be nice just to be able to customize your warlock a little and stand out of the crowd. Much like mages and the different "sheeps" they can do. But also to make WoW less sexists (or more sexist but atleast more balanced).

Let me explain, I don't think the succubus is an objectification of women, it is just to far way out of line that it becomes a joke. Much in the same way as a little lipstick is nice but too much makes a clown. You don't look at a succubus and think "This is a good representation of how women should be." It is a bad view, taken to it's extreme ending up as being ridiculous. So, yes, I would very much welcome an Edward Cullenesque incubus that whispers sweet nothings, sparkle and shower you with flowers as you travel Azeroth (he might even cry a little when critters die).

And the different male/female combinations of seduce on your targets? Well, thats a completely different hornets nest to stick an appendage in.

A good destruction warlock guide.

"Think of it as a Fire mage...
...if the Fire mage didn't need to worry about his mana pool.
And was on crack."

A really good guide on how to spec, gem, enchant and use your spells as a destro lock.

Int vs Hit

After reading a little on http://elitistjerks.com/ today and playing around with Simulationcraft my head now hurts and I think I've overloaded my poor brains.

I've always been told that the hit-cap was the most important thing to look for when looking at stats. But, I guess since warlocks don't obey any rules, hit-cap isn't that important as long as you get Int.

The stat priority for (destruction) warlocks looks like this:
Int > Hit (until you get capped at +17%) > Haste > Crit > Mastery

That means, never reforge any Int. Not even if it is to get you hit-capped. I know it sounds wrong but I ran it through Simcraft a couple of times and the math don't lie. Even tried to change Hit to Int so that I only had ~11% extra hit-chance and I still did more dps than if I would have been hit-capped.

Since warlocks doesn't have any spells that can cause a raid wipe if we miss, like a spell-steal or interupt, I guess you don't need to feel bad if you haven't reforged any Int to Hit to get hit-capped. As you get better gear the More-int vs. Hit-cap will become a non-issue. But still, I thought it was interesting that being hit-capped wasn't as important as everyone seem to think. :)

...now I only need to wrap my head around the different haste-caps... o.O

Origami rock

I don't know if there are a lot of people that call the summoning portal for a "stone". Probably cause of the Meeting Stones outside instances.

Even if there aren't that many it was worth it to carry an Origami rock in my bags for ~2 month until last night when someone said, "Sho, I think we need a stone."

...

Also, it is soon time for the Noblegarden event. Don't forget to stock up on Spring Flowers and Blossoming Branch.

Shogoth the Seeker

3000 quests done and I finaly got my seeker title. :)

I've looked under chairs
I've looked under tables
I've tried to find the key
To fifty million fables

chorus:
They call me The Seeker
I've been searching low and high
I won't get to get what I'm after
Till the day I die

I asked Bobby Dylan
I asked The Beatles
I asked Timothy Leary
But he couldn't help me either

chorus

People tend to hate me
'Cause I never smile
As I ransack their homes
They want to shake my hand

Focusing on nowhere
Investigating miles
I'm a seeker
I'm a really desperate man

I won't get to get what I'm after
Till the day I die

I learned how to raise my voice in anger
Yeah, but look at my face, ain't this a smile?
I'm happy when life's good
And when it's bad I cry
I've got values but I don't know how or why

I'm looking for me
You're looking for you
We're looking in at each other
And we don't know what to do

chorus

I have often regret my choice to become a tailor. But this kind of makes it worth the leveling. :)

I'm also glad that I have a female nelf friend. Shoulderless gowns on a male gnome looks...wrong.

PvP weekend.

It started with an innocent "lets gather some honor points" and ended with an entire sunday in battlegrounds. :)

But I've learned two things, destro warlocks with their succubus has an awesome array of CC. And people who gets cc'ed also gets very angry. :) Especially the tauren warrior that I DoTed and CCed to death. He came back and went straight for me even though two other melee was attacking him.

I also got into close combat with another warlock and sent him to the graveyard twice before he switched to his fel puppy...those doggies bite hard.

The spell of the day is the succubus Whiplash. :) Love that one. I have only managed to send someone flying of the edge in EotS once but I still love it. :)

Omnotron Defense System

Yay! We took down Omnotron Defense System last night. :) Took a while to get things right but to make things more fun we played "last man standing". Which means that the last person alive in a wipe gets a point. And after the raid, the person with most points gets 1000G.

Anything but ressing and/or running out of the room was permitted. :) Never had so much fun wiping. (And no, I didn't win the gold.)

Vent and Yasi

Been stuck infront of www.abc.com.au all day trying to see what damage Yasi was doing to Queensland. I've been really worried about how my grandmother was doing. 9.5m waves and 100kmh wind-speed and lots and lots of rain. News about roofs being torn off and power seem to have been out in many places.

But she was all right. :) Aparently my uncle was there, helping her to nail down the roof during the worst time of the cyclone. :D

And I found this link that I will save here so I don't need to go search for it next time I need it. :)

Resto-druid.

I recently made a druid just to see if I could manage to be a healer. So far I've only healed through two dungeons. One with a mage that wanted to be the tank. He was extremely good at keeping the aggro and even though he was a clothie I managed to keep him alive. :)

I learned two important things: 1. Druid do not have Life Tap. 2. You are not a good healer just by having a lot of "heals per second".

Now I just have to learn to see who needs what kind of heal and when. :)

GNOMES!!!

Read the quest!

I don't know how many times I've looked at the map and then ran to do a quest only to mess it up completely. Killing stuff when I should have used a quest item, killed stuff "by hand" when I've should have used a golem or some other vehicle. Fishing for an HOUR to get that arm, long after I had got the bloated eel. Started escort-quests and then went afk or running/flying around trying to find someone who is inside a cave.
Tip of the day: There are no kittens.

To glyph or not to glyph?

That is the question. Well, if you are going to use Fear in dungeons/raids you better have Glyph of Fear or you'll risk ninja-pulling.

But it is not that simple. Personally I love using the glyph but I've read about people who rather not use it. Because, even if it is a very nice glyph it does take away a rather nice trick we warlocks have. Fear-kiting. If you don't know what kiting is I'll try to explain it quickly. Fear-kiting is used when you want to get mobs or pvp-enemies to stay away from something, usually yourself. You cast Fear and they'll run away, simple as that. If used correctly you can "ping-pong" two mobs at the same time and take them down without them ever touching you. It can also be used to Fear-kite enemies in pvp so that they'll never reach the flag-carrier or get close to your healer.

OR you can use the glyph, with the 5 sec cooldown and root their clothies so that your melee can slice them in half. Mount up and run up to their flag-carrier, Shadowfury and Fear and let your friends be able to catch up. Holy Paladins have no chance to heal if they are chain Feared. And without the glyph, getting Feared could be a life-saver since a running target is harder to hit. Standing still makes you an easy target. And if you get into a sticky situation and need to make a mob run away, you can still use Deathcoil or Howl of Terror.

So, which is best? Glyphed or non-glyphed outside dungeons? Actually, both. :) What I love with warlocks is that we have so many fun spells to use depending on the situation. And if all warlocks choose the same setup bg's would get boring. Now, when they see us coming they'll never be sure of what will happen. :)

Patch 4.0.6 (PTR)

From http://www.wowhead.com/patchnotes=4.0.6-ptr:

For us destro-locks there are some quite nice news on the way. :) Shadow and Flame will proc from Incinerate aswell as Shadow Bolt. One less spell to keep track of since Incinerate is one of the fillers we use anyway.Thank you Blizzard. :)

But then they removed Drain Mana. ... Why? It is not as it is extremely important but it will make managing mana/health slightly harder. Guess we need to be a bit more careful to not lose both health and mana at the same time so that we could still use Life Tap. :)

And Curse of Exhaustion will reduce targets moving speed with 30% (as it was before 4.0.1) instead of 50%. Can't say that I ever used that as a destro-lock so I won't miss that.

To sum things up: Remove Shadow Bolt from the action bar and add a mana-potion to it instead. :) And be nice to the mana-supply...I mean healer.

Trying to figure out a nice "rotation"

Going through the spellbook, looking at all the spells I want to use and wondering if I need to use a second button-bar or if I could do things smarter.

Somehow I wonder how to juggle everything. I need to keep the Immolate and Corruption dots and some combination of Bane and Curse up all the time. Cast Shadowbolt and Soul Fire to keep buffs going. Watch the cd on Conflagrate and Chaos Bolt. Decide if I should cast Incinerate or Fel Flame. Maybe start using Demon Armour and skip Jinx. Watch what the Imp is doing. (Bind it to the mousewheel?) Use Demon Soul whenever it is of cd...and figure out what spells are most efficient to use before the buff wears out. Find a good keybinding for the Demonic Circle. And on top of that have room for Fear, Banish, Enslave Demon, Shadowfury, Howl of Terror, Summon Infernal and Deathcoil to do crowd control.

And Fire Rain...and potions and healthstone...and Life Tap and Drain Life. And maybe start using Singe Magic?

There is going to be a lot of buffs, debuffs, cd's and cc'ed mobs to keep track of.

    No, this isn't a QQ-post. :) I love to play as a warlock.
